Vice President Kamala Harris swore in new Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a brief ceremony Wednesday morning.
Buttigieg was sworn in with a bible that was held by his husband, Chasten Buttigieg.
Buttigieg is the first openly gay Cabinet member confirmed by the Senate. In the Trump administration, Rick Grenell served as director of National Intelligence, and was the first openly gay person to serve in a Cabinet-level position in an acting capacity.
Following his swearing in the Vice President offered congratulations to Buttigieg and his husband with elbow bumps. No questions or other comments were made.
Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff was also in attendance. The four posed together after the ceremony.
Some context: Six of Biden’s 23 Cabinet-level nominees requiring Senate approval have been confirmed. Buttigieg was confirmed 13 days after his nomination.
